One of Dubai's most striking sights lies out in the Persian Gulf: a man-made island shaped like a palm tree off Jumeirah, called Palm Jumeirah. The island is so large it can be seen from space.
The Palm is covered with villas and hotels. Jumeirah is already one of the city's most exclusive areas, and property on the Palm is even pricier, so the hotels here offer top-class service and elegant rooms.
What to see on the island
The View at The Palm. The best view of the island's shape is from level 52 of the Palm Tower, about 240 metres up.
Nakheel Mall is the shopping centre at the foot of the tower.
The Pointe, at the very tip of the palm's "trunk", is a waterfront of restaurants and bars with a great view of Atlantis The Palm, especially during the evening show.
Atlantis The Palm, on the island's outer crescent, is a resort with the Aquaventure water park and The Lost Chambers aquarium.
How to get there
A monorail runs along the palm's "trunk" from the mainland to Atlantis, and its first station connects with the Dubai Tram. A taxi is easy too: just name your hotel or The Pointe.
Tips before you go
To see the whole palm shape, go up The View at The Palm or see the island from the water, for example on a speedboat cruise past Dubai Marina, the Burj Al Arab and the Palm.
The evening is the best time for The Pointe: sunset over the Gulf and Atlantis lit up.
