An old abandoned fishing village located near the Old Town of Ras Al Khaimah. It's an interesting place for those who like wandering through abandoned houses — you can literally touch the past here. The village dates back to the 14th century. Most of the houses are built from coral reef blocks, which locals, mostly fishermen, simply sawed into pieces and used as building material. Not all the houses on the site are open, but some can be entered. Near the village stands an old mosque, no longer used for worship, and a little further — the old Al Jazeera fort.
People left this place in the mid-1970s, taking everything of value with them.
A few houses on the outskirts are occupied by construction workers from Bangladesh and Pakistan who guard the site.
It's best to come here by taxi and ask the driver to come back for you after a while, since finding a taxi here can be tricky.
Wear closed shoes and bring water. Also be careful — snakes can be found here.
The village has only been partially restored and keeps its authentic, untouched look — that's its main value compared to the reconstructed heritage villages in other emirates. Al Jazeera Al Hamra is currently considered for tentative UNESCO World Heritage status and is occasionally used as a venue for cultural events, including the Ras Al Khaimah Art Festival. As of now, no permanent museum has opened on the site.
