The main attraction of the historic center of Ras Al Khaimah is the old fort and the National Museum, located right in the heart of the city. The museum occupies the fort building itself. The fort served for many years as a defensive stronghold and is built in the classic Arabian style, decorated with watchtowers and wide terraces. Several floors of the fort house the historical museum's collections, including ancient manuscripts, ethnographic and archaeological exhibits. The most original part of the museum is the hall dedicated to pirates. This hall is especially interesting for kids: genuine weapons, elements of pirate ships, and costumes usually cause genuine delight.
The fort is also known as the place where a peace treaty was signed in 1820 between the Persian sheikhs and the British government.
Admission costs about 5 AED ($1.5), 2 AED for children.
Opening hours: Tuesday–Thursday, Saturday and Sunday — 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Friday — 3:00 pm to 7:30 pm, closed on Mondays.
Near the museum are the ruins of the old fort, and a few hundred meters away there's a large fish market, where you can buy fresh fish and all kinds of seafood, while on the other side is Kuwaiti trading street, where you can buy textile products, jewelry, dishes, spices, and souvenirs. If you keep walking along the trading street, marked on all maps as Sidroh Street, you'll see a large Gold Souq, the place to go looking for the perfect jewelry.
