The ancient fortress and mosque of Al Badiya stand in the village of the same name, 40 km from the centre of Fujairah. The mosque and fort are believed to have been built about 500 years ago, though the exact date is unknown — it's considered the oldest mosque in the UAE.
What to see
Al Badiya Mosque has architectural features quite uncharacteristic for the region — such structures are more typical of Yemen: four uneven domes rest on a single central stone pillar (most mosques are built with one large dome instead). This design gave the prayer hall natural ventilation and light without electricity.
On the hill next to the mosque stand two watchtowers from the same defensive complex — worth the climb for a view of the fort and the bay. The fort itself is a great vantage point, with a sweeping view of the bay and mountains.
The mosque is still active and holds 30 people at a time. Any visitor can go inside, not just Muslims: modest clothing is required, and women are offered a headscarf at the entrance; it's closed to visitors during prayer times.

Al Badiya is 40 km from central Fujairah, best reached by car or taxi. If you're staying in Dubai, you can visit as part of a day tour to Fujairah with transfer.
Tips before you go
The mosque is open daily from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, admission is free. Dress modestly — covered shoulders and knees; women are usually offered a headscarf at the entrance.
