Al Badiya fortress and mosque

The ancient fortress and mosque of Al Badiya are located in the village of Al Badiya, 40 km from the centre of Fujairah. 
It is believed that the mosque and fort were built about 500 years ago, though the exact date is unknown. It is considered the oldest mosque in the United Arab Emirates.
The mosque has architectural features that are quite uncharacteristic for this region — such structures are more typical of Yemen. In fact, all four uneven domes rest on a single central stone pillar — most mosques are built with one large dome instead; this design provided natural ventilation and light for the prayer hall without electricity. 
On the hill next to the mosque stand two watchtowers from the same defensive complex — worth the climb for a view of the fort and the bay. 
Al Badiya Mosque is still active and can hold 30 people at a time. Any visitor can go inside, not just Muslims: modest clothing is required, and women will be offered a headscarf at the entrance; the mosque is closed to visitors during prayer times. The mosque is open daily from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, admission is free.
The fort is a great spot to survey the surrounding area, with a breathtaking view of the bay and mountains.
