Al Wathba Wetland Reserve is the UAE's first legally protected wetland, established by decree of Sheikh Zayed, and the first Abu Dhabi site added to the IUCN Green List (2018). Up to 4,000 pink flamingos gather here, alongside more than 250 recorded bird species; two trails (1.5km and 3km) and a bird hide are open to visitors.
Entry is free, with registration at the gate. The reserve operates only on Thursdays and Saturdays, 8:00am–4:00pm (last entry 2:00pm), and is open seasonally, roughly October through April. Flamingo-watching peaks in spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November).
At the time of writing (August), the reserve is closed for its summer break — plan your visit for the autumn-winter season and confirm reopening dates before travelling.
