Louvre Abu Dhabi was opened in 2017 on Saadiyat island in Abu Dhabi.
On an area of 24 thousand square meters, you will see more than 300 exhibits of Parisian Louvre, Georges Pompidou Center, as well as Versailles. All of them are leased for 30 years. The masterpieces of da Vinci, Picasso, Matisse, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Monet, Manet, Magritte, and many others are shown here. In addition, the museum has thematic halls where cultural objects from different countries are exhibited: China, India, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and others.
Since the main mission of the museum is to unite the cultures of the east and west, the museum has 12 rooms that tell the story of mankind from the first settlements to the present day. The halls display expositions telling about the history of religion, culture, trade, and science.
The museum building itself is a piece of modern art. Louvre Abu Dhabi was designed in such a way that visitors get the impression that the museum is located in the middle of the open sea and in the open air, so the building has a huge number of water channels, and the thing of special pride is the openwork dome through which the light bizarrely falls on the floor. Trunks of trees planted in the building stretch towards the dome, so it seems that the dome is made of intertwined branches that create marvelous patterns. The architect's name is Jean Nouvel, winner of the Pritzker Prize, a kind of Nobel Prize in architecture.
In the near future, they plan to build a branch of the Guggenheim Museum of Modern Art and the Sheikh Zayed Historical Museum.
The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, Monday is a day off. On Thursday and Friday the museum is open from 10.00 to 22.00, on Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from 10.00 to 20.00
The cost of visiting is $17, for people under 22 about $8, and for children under 13 the admission is free. Tickets can be purchased at the museum box office or online.
