Sharjah Calligraphy Museum

The Sharjah Calligraphy Museum is located in the historical city center, in the house of Hamad Al Midfa on Calligraphy Square, not far from the Heart of Sharjah architectural district and the Sharjah Heritage Museum.

The history lesson starts the moment you see the building itself — it's built in the classic Arabic style, low-rise, of pale stone that beautifully reflects the light, with a massive wooden door.

The museum's exhibition is dedicated to the history and culture of Arabic script. You can trace how Arabic writing evolved from ancient manuscripts to modern books. There is an entire section devoted to the refined craft of gold-leaf calligraphy, and works by local and international calligraphers are also on display. During your visit you can take a calligraphy lesson, and families with children aged 6–12 can join daily hands-on drop-in workshops.

Opening hours and admission (once reopened)

The museum is open Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 to 20:00 and on Fridays from 16:00 to 20:00.

Admission is AED 10 (about $3) for adults and AED 5 ($1.5) for children under 12.
