The largest mosque in Fujairah is located not far from the city centre. Mosques in the UAE are usually named either after prominent Muslim figures or after whoever built them, and this one is no exception — it bears the name of the ruler of the Emirates, Sheikh Zayed.
Everyone notices the resemblance between the Fujairah mosque and the mosque in Abu Dhabi. This majestic white stone building is the second-largest in the UAE, after the Abu Dhabi mosque.
The mosque has 65 domes and 6 minarets: four standing 100 metres tall at the corners of the main prayer hall, and two more around 90 metres tall at the corners of the courtyard.
The mosque can hold 28,000 worshippers at the same time. The mosque was designed by the Malaysian firm Mabani Engineering Consulting in an Ottoman style with Moorish elements (the interior arches recall the Mezquita in Córdoba); unlike the carpet in the Abu Dhabi mosque, the one in the main prayer hall here was assembled from several sections rather than woven as a single piece.
The mosque is open to non-Muslims too: you can visit for free from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm any day except Friday (you can book online in advance or just show up), modest dress is required — women will need a headscarf and an abaya (bring your own, none are provided on site).
