Al Fahidi historical district

The Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood sits on the bank of Dubai Creek and shows what an ordinary seaside district of Dubai looked like a hundred years ago.

Many houses here have been restored or almost rebuilt, but carefully, so it does not feel like a stage set: bright sun on pale walls, people in traditional dress, the call to prayer, the lapping of the creek and the smell of fresh coffee create the atmosphere of an old town where no one is in a hurry.

What to see inside

Lanes and houses. Low houses of pale stone with barjeel wind towers, narrow alleys and inner courtyards.

Cafés and shops. Cosy cafés, colourful restaurants and souvenir shops selling silk scarves, embroidered slippers, bright carpets, tableware and spices.

Al Fahidi Fort and the Dubai Museum. The fort that houses the Dubai Museum closes for restoration from time to time — if you want to go inside, check the museum's status before you visit. The neighbourhood itself is always open.

How to get there

The nearest metro stations are Sharaf DG and Al Ghubaiba on the Bur Dubai side. From here it is a short walk to the abra station to cross the Creek to the Deira souks.

Tips before you go

Come towards evening: the lights come on, it gets cooler, and the creekside restaurants serve inexpensive dinners before a walk along the waterfront and a boat ride.
