Deira

Old trading Dubai: the Gold Souk, the Spice Souk and budget hotels

Dubai district · 4 places · 163 hotels

Deira is old trading Dubai on the northern bank of Dubai Creek. It still lives by its markets: narrow streets, shops, warehouses and wharves where wooden dhows tie up. Across the water, on the southern bank, is Bur Dubai, a few minutes away by abra boat.

Why go

The markets are the main draw: the Gold Souk with hundreds of jewellery shops and the neighbouring Spice Souk, which you can find by the smell of saffron and frankincense. Bargaining is expected. In the north of the district, near the Sharjah border, are Al Mamzar Beach Park and the new public Khor Al Mamzar Beach, opened in May 2026, with a night beach open around the clock.

Where to stay and who it suits

Deira has some of the most affordable hotels in Dubai, and DXB airport is 10–15 minutes away. It suits budget travellers and shoppers; the Jumeirah beaches and Downtown are 20–30 minutes by taxi or metro.

How to get there

Both metro lines run through Deira; the closest to the souks is the Green Line, at Al Ras and Gold Souq stations. From Bur Dubai, cross the creek by abra and pay in cash.
