Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and the Dubai Fountain — the natural base for a first visit
Dubai district · 12 places · 103 hotels
Downtown Dubai is the showcase of the modern city and where most first-time visitors start. It is home to the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building (828 m), with Dubai Mall, one of the largest shopping centres on the planet, and the lake of the Dubai Fountain at its foot. The district was built from scratch in the 2000s, so it is compact: most places are a 5–15 minute walk from each other.
The highlights are the Burj Khalifa observation decks, more than 450 m up, and the evening fountain show, best watched from the lakeside promenade and the bridge by Souk Al Bahar. Inside Dubai Mall you will find the Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo, an ice rink and the children's city of professions KidZania — a ready plan for a hot day. On the lakeshore stands Dubai Opera, shaped like a dhow.
A little further along Sheikh Zayed Road are the Museum of the Future (closed for a new exhibition since 1 September 2026) and the Dubai World Trade Centre. To the south runs the Dubai Water Canal with promenades for evening walks, and in City Walk there is the indoor rainforest The Green Planet.
Downtown is the best choice for a first trip or a short stay: everything important is close and the metro is a few minutes away. Hotels range from the budget Rove chain to the Address and the Armani Hotel inside the Burj Khalifa, but overall prices here are among the highest in the city. There is no sea in the district — the Jumeirah beaches are 10–15 minutes away by taxi.
Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station on the metro Red Line is linked to the mall by a covered, air-conditioned walkway. The same Red Line runs here from DXB airport with no changes; a taxi takes about 20 minutes without traffic.
